Sexuality 101

Sexuality is about sex, but it’s also about much more.

It can refer to your body and how you relate to it, whom you are attracted to, and how you might act on those feelings. Sexuality can also refer to ideas about sex, gender, desire, and power in your community and the broader world.

Sexuality is deeply related to your sense of self and grows with you – everyone’s understanding and experience of their own sexuality is different and can change over time. Understanding your sexuality is a lifelong learning process that can help you advocate for what you want and need with the people you have sex with.

How to talk to your provider

How to talk to your provider about

Sex

While it may seem a bit funny at first, open and honest communication about your sexual activity between you and your provider will lead to better and more specialized care.

How to start the conversation

  • I want to tell you that I have been having sex because I’ve heard that it’s important for you to know for supporting my health.
  • I have some questions about sex. Is it supposed to hurt the first time you have sex? Can you get pregnant the first time?
  • I had sex without a condom, and I don't know what to do. How can I get tested for STIs and pregnancy?
  • A condom broke while I was having sex. What should I do?
  • I think I am pregnant, but I do not want to be. What can I do about this?
  • I think I am pregnant, but I am not ready to have a child. What can I do now?
  • How can I tell my parents that I am pregnant?
