Right to confidential care in California

In most cases, a parent or legal guardian must consent on behalf of a minor for medical care. There are specific services you can access confidentially as a teen without telling your parent or guardian depending which services are protected varies by what state you live in.

In California, some of these confidential services include:

  • Prescriptions for birth control (teens can get birth control for free, and no one else has to know about it through a program called FamilyPACT. Ask clinic staff how to sign up.)
  • Getting condoms from a clinic
  • STI and HIV testing and treatment (just ask the clinic about how to get contacted privately about the results)
  • Abortion
  • Pregnancy care
  • Sexual assault services

More information on what services minors can access in every state without parental consent can be found here. You can always ask your doctor what things can be kept confidential where you live.
