Many people only go to the doctor when there’s a problem – like a cold or a broken bone. But regular general check-ups with a healthcare provider (such as a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant) can help you stay on top of your health now and create good habits for the future. Finding a healthcare provider you trust earlier in life before issues come up, will help you feel supported and empowered when you do need support.
Some providers only see kids (these are called pediatricians). If your provider is a pediatrician, at some point you will need to transition to an adult provider because most pediatricians stop seeing their patients between the ages of 18 and 21. When to make this transition is different for everyone. You can ask your pediatrician for recommendations when you’re ready to transition to a different provider.
As you get older, you may decide that there are certain things you’d prefer not to discuss with the provider you saw when you were younger, like getting tested for STIs and starting or changing your birth control method. While some teens see the same provider they saw when they were younger for these needs, others prefer to go to a clinic that specializes in sexual and reproductive healthcare for privacy. For many teens, seeking care for their sexual and reproductive health needs is the first time they seek out care for themselves from a new provider.
The tools and resources in this section will help you prepare for setting up a healthcare appointment for yourself whenever you’re ready.
