Infections of the reproductive system
Yeast (a specific type called candida albicans) naturally exists in the vagina.
This type of yeast is present in the vagina along with naturally-occurring bacteria, which play a role in vaginal hygiene (keeping the vagina healthy!). When the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina gets thrown off, this can cause an overgrowth of yeast which can lead to a yeast infection.
FAST FACT
Short-course, over-the-counter treatments (products that promise to take care of the infection in 1 to 3 days) contain a really high dose of medication and can cause additional irritation or burning – sticking with a 7-day version will lessen chances of irritation.
