Strategies for sexual wellness

There are several reliable strategies and practices for protecting against STIs.

The best way to protect against STIs during all types of sex is to use barrier protection during PnV, oral and anal sex. There are many different types of protection that act as a barrier between skin and fluids such as:

External Condoms

External Condoms (sometimes referred to as just “condoms” and other times referred to as “male condoms”) are placed on penises (and sometimes toys!) and can be used as barriers during vaginal, anal, and oral sex.

Internal Condoms

Internal Condoms (sometimes referred to “female condoms”) are inserted in the vagina or anus for vaginal or anal sex respectively. Internal condoms can be placed up to 8 hours before sex.

Dental Dams

Dental Dams are used as a barrier over the vulva and vagina, generally for use during oral sex performed on the vulva/vagina.

STI Testing

You might want an STI test if you’re experiencing something unusual, think you have been exposed to an infection, are experiencing symptoms, or because it’s a part of your regular routine testing every 3-6 months or after every new partner.

How to start the conversation

  • I need to be tested for [STIs or name of STI] because I think someone I had sex with may have had something. Is that something we can do today during my visit?
  • I am having stuff coming out of my vagina that smells different than usual. Could that be an infection?
  • I am sexually active, and get tested regularly... can I do that here?
