Know your STIs

What is it?

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that develops in stages. It starts as a painless sore usually in the genitals, rectum or mouth (often not seen or felt). After the sore heals, there is often a rash and then no symptoms for a long time. If not treated, in the final stage of infection, syphilis causes damage to the brain, heart, eyes, or nerves.

How does someone get it?

You can get syphilis by having vaginal, oral, or anal sex with someone who has a syphilis sore. Barriers, such as condoms and dental dams can reduce the likelihood of contact with a sore, though sometimes sores can be in areas not covered by condoms.

How can it be treated?

If it is detected early (before the final symptoms), syphilis can be cured with antibiotics.
