Talking to provider 1:1

In this scenario, the young person is at their appointment alone, and is interested in getting on birth control for the first time and learning about STIs.

Provider: (knocks on the door and enters the room)

Provider: “Hi (insert your name) I’m (insert their name), how are you doing today?”

You: “Hi, nice to meet you. I’m doing pretty good thanks.”

Provider: “Good, so what brings you in today”

You:“I’m here because I wanted to talk about birth control for the first time” (Here’s where you can say whatever reason you are there for! )

You: “I actually have a list of questions I wanted to ask about while I am here too.”

Provider: “Of course! Go ahead”

You: “They’re kind of embarrassing I don’t know…”

Provider: “I’ve heard it all, there’s no need to be embarrassed.”

You: “Okay… Can someone catch a disease if someone else just touched another person’s private parts with their hands?”

Provider: “That’s a great question, I’m really glad you asked. I know it can be hard to talk about things like this but it is an important part of your health and I’m really happy you’re able to see that. Yes, there are some diseases that could be passed on that way but why don’t we start with you telling me what you understand about sexually transmitted infections. In order for me to give you more personalized advice, it would be helpful to know what sexual experiences you have had because the chances of being exposed to infections vary by the kind of sexual activity, and if you think you have any symptoms of some kind of infection.”
